Our Finish
Every panel is finished by hand. That's the appeal, and it's also why no two come out identical. This page explains what that actually looks like, so you know what you're getting before it arrives.
The patina
Our rust finish is a chemical process, not a paint or a coating. Solution is applied to bare steel, the steel reacts, and the color that comes up is the result of that reaction — how the solution pooled, how humid the shop was that day, how the sheet was sitting.
Then it's sealed.
Expect variation. Two panels of the same design will read as the same piece but won't match stripe for stripe. You'll see:
- Tonal range across the face, from deep umber through warm copper
- Mottling, cloudiness, and organic blotching
- Directional streaking where the solution ran
- Darker or lighter concentration near edges and corners
- Panel-to-panel color differences within the same design and size
None of that is a flaw. It's the difference between a finish and a print.
Does it keep changing?
Short answer: no, and that's intentional.
The sealer stops the reaction. An unsealed panel would keep rusting indefinitely, eventually flaking and staining whatever's beneath it. Ours are sealed so the finish you receive is the finish you keep.
You may notice a slight deepening over the first few weeks as the sealer fully cures. After that it holds.
Cut edges
Laser cutting leaves marks. Along cut edges you may see faint heat discoloration, a very slight taper through the thickness, and small witness lines where the beam entered or exited.
These are inherent to the process. Every laser-cut steel part in the world has them.
Bent edges
Forming the ninety-degree returns means the steel passes through a press brake die. That contact can leave faint die marks on the flange — the part that faces the wall, not the face you see.
We sand what's visible before finishing. Traces on the returns are normal.
What we do consider a defect
To be clear, these are on us and we'll make them right:
- Cracks, splits, or tearing in the steel
- Bends that are out of square or visibly inconsistent
- Finish that is peeling, flaking, or actively shedding
- Cut geometry that doesn't match the design
- Wrong size or wrong design shipped
- Missing mounting hardware
- Damage that occurred in transit

A note on photographs
Steel is difficult to photograph honestly. It's reflective, the patina shifts under different light, and every screen renders color differently.
Our images show a representative panel in a real room. Yours will be recognizably the same piece with its own character. If exact color matching matters for your project, email us before ordering and we'll talk through it.
